Topamax is used for the treatment of seizures. It is also prescribed for the treatment of migraine headaches in adults, as well as a number of other medical conditions as determined by a doctor.
Topamax is to be used in strict accordance with a doctor’s directions. Topamax does not have to be taken with food. The tablet is to be swallowed whole – do not break, crush or chew the tablet. While using Topamax it is essential to increase the intake of fluids to prevent kidney stones. Do not suddenly stop using Topamax as this may cause seizures. When treatment needs to stop, a doctor will gradually lower the dosage.
If a dose is missed, it can be taken as soon as you remember, as long as it does not clash with the next scheduled dose. In this case, rather skip the missed dose. Never take a double dose.
Topamax can cause vision problems, confusion, drowsiness, dizziness and difficulty in concentrating. These symptoms may worsen if Topamax is taken in conjunction with alcohol and other medications. Topamax is to be used with caution. In the early stages of treatment do not drive or perform any potentially dangerous activity in case of an adverse reaction. If symptoms persist, or get worse, contact a doctor immediately. Topamax should only be used by the person for whom it was prescribed. Never increase or decrease the dosage without your doctor’s approval.
