Elavil is used to treat depression by maintaining correct chemical levels in the brain, thereby improving mood and promoting a feeling of well-being.
Elavil comes in tablet form to be taken orally. The usual dose is one tablet, four times a day. Elavil does not need to be taken with food. An improvement in the patient’s condition may not be evident for up to two weeks, after which there should be a significant improvement. Do not stop using Elavil without speaking to a doctor even if the condition has improved. Patients who have used Elavil for an extended period may require lower doses before stopping treatment completely. Never increase or decrease the dosage, and do not stop the dosage, without your doctor’s permission.
If a dose is missed, it can be taken as soon as you remember, as long as it does not clash with the next scheduled dose. In this case, rather skip the missed dose. Never take a double dose.
Be cautious when driving or performing a potentially dangerous task while using Elavil. If you feel drowsy or dizzy, avoid these activities completely. Use alcohol with caution while taking Elavil as the combination can bring on dizziness and drowsiness.
