Isotretinoin is a synthetic version of Vitamin A which was developed in the early 1980s. Prior to this, acne was treated with high doses of Vitamin A. These high doses, however, caused side-effects, the most common being a decrease in the body’s production of sebum which resulted in dry hair. The synthetic version of Vitamin A was found to cause less side-effects and, more importantly, it was found to be more effective in treating acne that real Vitamin A. This explains why, in present times, isotretinoin has become such a popular choice in the treatment of acne. Accutane is the brand name given to one of the many versions of this medication.

Accutane works by reducing the amount of oil manufactured in the skin’s oil glands, thereby assisting the skin to renew itself faster.
