Furosemide
Furosemide is a fast acting potent loop diuretic, often called a water pill, that limits the body’s absorption of salt to prevent fluid retention. The salt then leaves the body through urination. Furosemide is used to treat fluid retention and edema (swelling) in patients suffering congestive heart failure, kidney disease, liver disease, a build-up of fluid in the lungs, and hypertension (high blood pressure). Doctors prescribe Furosemide for a number of other medical conditions.
Do not be alarmed if you urinate more than usual while using Furosemide – this is quite normal and it means that you body is getting rid of excess fluid. If this increase in urination is causing disturbed sleep at night, take your daily dose of Furosemide before 6pm. To avoid your stomach getting upset, take Furosemide with food.
If you are a person who has difficulty in urinating, it is very important to tell your doctor, as this medication may not be suitable for you.
Because you are likely to urinate more often while using Furosemide, it is important to drink more fluids than usual. This is to avoid the possibility of dehydration. Your doctor will advise you on what type of liquids, and how often you should drink.
You may feel dizzy in the early stages of using Furosemide. Avoid drinking alcohol as this can cause the dizziness to increase. If you experience any other side-effects, consult your doctor immediately as your dose may need adjusting.
