Accutane
Accutane (isotretinoin) is a medication that was originally used as chemotherapy treatment for certain types of cancer. While it is still used for this purpose, Accutane has become a very popular medication for the treatment of acne. Sufferers of acne have reported excellent results, especially patients who have not responded successfully to traditional acne treatments.
Isotretinoin is a synthetic version of Vitamin A which was developed in the early 1980s. Prior to this, acne was treated with high doses of Vitamin A. These high doses, however, caused side-effects, the most common being a decrease in the body’s production of sebum which resulted in dry hair. The synthetic version of Vitamin A was found to cause less side-effects and, more importantly, it was found to be more effective in treating acne that real Vitamin A. This explains why, in present times, isotretinoin has become such a popular choice in the treatment of acne. Accutane is the brand name given to one of the many versions of this medication.
Accutane works by reducing the amount of oil manufactured in the skin’s oil glands, thereby assisting the skin to renew itself faster.
Like every medicine, Accutane is to be used with caution in certain cases. For example, if Accutane is used by a pregnant woman, serious fetal abnormalities can occur. Just one dose of Accutane can damage an unborn baby’s brain and facial features. If you are planning to fall pregnant, do not take Accutane. If a woman does become pregnant while using Accutane, discontinue the treatment immediately and contact a doctor for further advice.
Accutane is prescribed for various other medical conditions as determined by a doctor.
