Accutane

Accutane (isotretinoin) is a medication that was originally used as chemotherapy treatment for certain types of cancer. While it is still used for this purpose, Accutane has become a very popular medication for the treatment of acne. Isotretinoin is a synthetic version of Vitamin A which was developed in the early 1980s. Prior to this, acne was treated with high doses of Vitamin A. Like every medicine, Accutane is to be used with caution in certain cases. For example, if Accutane is used by a pregnant woman, serious fetal abnormalities can occur. Just one dose of Accutane can damage an unborn baby’s brain and facial features. If you are planning to fall pregnant, do not take Accutane. If a woman does become pregnant while using Accutane, discontinue the treatment immediately and contact a doctor for further advice.
